If you're wise enough to search for information about bed designs, you're probably going to have a much easier time finding a bed that you really like. There's a lot of choices out there, and getting a good idea of the main streams of design out there is a great first step to narrowing things down.

For those that are open to anything and everything in terms of bed designs, it's helpful to have some way to grasp all the different types of beds out there. The first thing to know is what kind of material you want your bed to be made out of. If you're like most people, you will want a wooden bed. Wood is comfortable to touch and is one of the softer materials as far as construction materials go. It is also strong and can be very attractive. You'll find the most variety in wooden bed designs.

Metal Beds

The only other commonly used material for making beds is metal, and for some people this can be a good choice.  It can certainly be the more durable of the two materials, or at least easier to make so.  That's why many bunk bed designs that are built to last (read: industrial grade) are built with metal.  Keep this in mind if you are searching for a bunk bed for your kids and you need something that will stand up to the abuse.

Other reasons people choose metal beds are because of the design possibilities.  Metal has different strength characteristics than wood and can be used to create shapes that would be impossible in wood.  This makes for some very  interesting modern bed designs, and certain metal loft bed designs make creative use of this advantage.  Metal can be used to create the most minimalist structures- a loft bed matching this description could be perfect for that trendy bachelor pad, though keep in mind that single bed designs may be very conducive to staying single!  Nevertheless, some of the coolest-of-the-cool latest bed designs may only be available in metal.

The Master Bedroom

Platform bed designs, including double bed designs of all sizes, mainly vary in style and most (with the exception of poster beds) consist of a headboard, footboard, and rails.  Here, the main consideration may be whether you prefer traditional or contemporary bed designs.  The beds you will find in large, mainstream furniture stores will mostly be traditional or traditional with a twist.  For more contemporary stuff, try a home store like Ikea.
