Better Life with Garden Lights
60Do you wish you had more time to spend in your garden? You know, that outdoor space around your abode which is your most accessible connection with the natural world? Are you finding that you tend to wake up and get ready for work, put in a long day at the office or wherever you are employed, and return home only to eat dinner and get ready to go to bed so that the process may be repeated again? And that though you'd like to spend more time in your garden, it's only in the rare free daylight moments that you are actually able to? It so, garden lights may be what you need to create more ways and opportunities of enjoying your wonderful garden. Using garden lights, not only will you be able to get out of the house after the sun has gone down, you can also enjoy the outdoors in a way that might not otherwise be possible during the heat of the day.
Light Buyer, Know Thyself
For instance, with the installation of garden lights, you can dine out during sunset hours and even after, savoring the peaceful sights and sounds in your garden after dark. Very zealous gardeners can even get their gardening done at night, if that's the only time they are able to get their hands in the earth. The neighbors might find it a bit strange, but it sure beats watching TV.
By now you are probably getting the idea that there are many ways in which garden lights can benefit your life. But are you also aware that there is a huge variety of lights on the market to choose from? Depending on what you need and what makes the most sense for your house and garden, there are lights that mount on walls, around pathways, lights on lamp posts, rock lights, spot lights, lights on strings, low voltage lights, and solar lights, to name a few of the more popular and/or interesting ones.
It can be a bit difficult to choose, so you should understand how these lights function and then see how they match up with your needs.
Know What's Available
If your garden gets sunlight reliably and you just need something to light the boundaries of your garden or garden path to keep people from straying where they shouldn't, the best choice would be solar lights. For paths, solar garden lights can be installed directly into the ground and you don't have to connect them to a separate energy source- they are 100% powered by the sun. This also means you don't have to hire an electrician to run a power cable out to the lights. A plus side to these lights is that they can look quite charming, and make a pathway more inviting to visitors. The cheapest and simplest models will provide enough light to just illuminate the path and not much more. A fun variation on this theme are rock lights, lights which are encased in a rock. These are natural-looking and more unobtrusive- most people may not even realize they are rocks when they see them during daytime. Strategically placed, these rock lights both illuminate and enchant.
If you want more light, get one that is brighter or perhaps a light on a lamppost would work the best. Being higher up, these will cast their light over a wider area- perfect for if you would like to take a stroll through the garden and admire your plants at night or just if you want a wider area illuminated with tasteful lighting.
If you are the gardener who needs to work the earth after sundown, you will probably want something brighter. A wall mounted spotlight which shines on areas of the garden you wish to work in could work well for this purpose. You could get solar lights for this purpose too and they should give enough light if they get enough sun to charge during the day. Of course, a light connected to a your home's electrical source would be more reliable if you need the garden to be really well-lit.
Remember that when you don't need a whole lot of light, and even when you do, LED lights are the lowest energy consumers and also the light with the longest lifespan. This means that you should use LED lights for both low voltage garden lights as well as solar garden lights. They cost a bit more initially, but should more than make up the difference in their duration and energy efficiency.
Light Up Your Outdoor Life
Rare is the person who does not like a well-kept garden. We spend time, money, and energy on making our gardens beautiful so that we may spend time in them and enjoy the outdoors shaped by the hand of man. But thanks to our busy modern lifestyles, it is also more common to not have time to spend in the garden than to be able to really sit and walk through these spaces that are so important to us.
With garden lights on our side, we can balance our indoor lives with more time spent in nature.
