The girls of France are known for being stylish, sophisticated, and perhaps a bit snobby.  Whether this is true or just a stereotype is hard to know for sure, but France most definitely has its share of bombshells and is perhaps the world capital of women's fashion.  Everyone knows that French is supposed to be the most romantic language, and whether you agree or, like me, disagree with this assertion, even I have to admit that French sounds pretty good when coming from a pretty lady.  French girls, or French women, let's call them, are known for their slim figures, which the exact opposite of what American women are commonly known for.  However, in contrast with the average American woman, the French are decidely more…hairy.  There's different standards for different people, and some may actually be quite fond of hairy French girls. There's even been studies on why this is so, and it was found that French women are able to keep their girlish figures by eating regularly, including having a normal breakfast.  That's right, it comes from being regular and healthy, so don't even try to blame it on something weird like escargot.  Besides their figures, French women also have a sort of allure about them.  They are certainly not known for being servile.  In this article, we explore some of the many facets of the oftentimes dazzling women of this country.

She of noble strength, the beautiful Audrey Tautou.

French Girl Names and Meanings

Let's start with the stuff that's in a French girl's name. Would a rose by any other name smell less sweet? Probably, since our thoughts have a lot to do with how we perceive things. It does us well, then, to consider some common French girls names and meanings in order to get a glimpse of how their names might possibly influence their personalities. Some of the most popular French girl names, like Alice (meaning 'noble kind'), are actually well known in other countries and are common names for girls there, too. Others, like Andromaque, are more historical and/ or literary and you are more unlikely to run across a French girl who bears that moniker. Audrey is a name we know quite well in the United States, and is the name of a very famous French actress who we will visit with later in the article. The name has a very different pronunciation in its original French, however. Interestingly enough, while it is a common name in France, its origins are English and the name means "noble strength".
Here are some other names of people you have probably met before, either in person or on film:

  • Ann- grace, favor
  • Belle- beautiful
  • Christine- follower of Christ
  • Danielle- God is my judge
  • Diane
  • Emilie- rival
  • Fannie- from France!
  • Jacqueline- supplanter or 'may God protect'
  • Jolie- pretty, as in Angelina Jolie, whose name then means 'Angel Pretty'
  • Marie- bitter
  • Melanie- black
  • Michelle- Who is like God?
  • Nancy- grace, favor
  • Sophie- wisdom
  • Stephanie- the crown of glory
  • Therese- harvester

and finally, one that's becoming more common these days, Zoe. Of Greek origins, it means 'life'.

Judging from this small sampling of names most of us are familiar with, we see that the French seem to value beauty, religion, and certain virtuous qualities. There are some other interesting names in there, even ones with a less than positive meaning, like 'supplanter' (Jacqueline). It seems that a lot of people must not know the meanings of some of these names, or else they wouldn't use them to name their children. If nothing else, it shows that French girls, as well as most girls similarly named, have familiar names that have some pretty funny meanings nowadays. Paradoxically, you could say that a lot of these names have no meaning nowadays, as most people would be clueless if you asked them what their name meant!

French Beauties

So now, onto those gorgeous French girls! These are the ones who made the beauty of French women legendary, or ones who continue to do so. As a side note, at least one part-French woman has commented that in France, women are expected to look "jolie" (pretty) and that's it. She lamented the relatively narrow definition of 'pretty' in France and commented on how in America, a variety of looks are appreciated and could be considered pretty. She went on challenge anyone to name a well-known French beauty that isn't white… I couldn't meet the challenge, so here's a collection of beautiful (white) French Women.
The aforementioned Audrey Tautou must make this list, as she won the hearts of moviegoers all over the world with her portrayal of the title character in the movie "Amelie". She has a blend of sweetness and intelligence, not to mention great beauty, that makes her unique in the entertainment world. Other beautiful French women who have made their mark in the movie world are Juliette Binoche, Sophie Marceau, Emanuelle Beart, and recently Oscar winner Marion Cotillard who all have a beauty that seems to be more than skin deep. Unfortunately, no article can give you all the info on French girls, and to understand them, you will have to get to know one yourself!
