Wallpaper Designs
62Sometimes, people just don't want to have a plain wall. This is understandable, since you can get some great effects with decorative wallpaper. There's a certain feeling you get when the walls surrounding you feature a design that repeats itself- it's a little like floating in some sort of fantasy world. Some feng shui proponents say that a blank wall gives a sense of hopelessness, and while this may or may not be true, there is something to be said about having otherwise "empty" spaces filled with something. This psychological need might be why some people are hoarders, filling spaces in their homes with clutter. While wallpaper may not fit in the same category, it does seem to give a sense of comfort or being grounded to some. For people who fit into this category to greater or lesser degress, there is probably a wallpaper out there that is perfect for you. It's mostly a matter of how much you want to pay, but there are so many categories and unique designs for wallpaper that if you want something, you can find it. And in the off chance that you can't, there are companies out there that allow you to design your own wallpaper, which they will fabricate for you.
Modern and Vintage Designs
Modern wallpaper designs feature designs that are mostly notable for not looking old fashioned to people currently searching for wallpaper. Designs may be linear or free form, but they will usually feature colors and lines that are in-line with contemporary sensibilities. You have to be careful when buying modern designs, because they may become old really quick if novelty is the only thing they have going. Look out for contemporary wallpaper designs- make sure that their appeal will not wear off in a few years' time, the earth can't afford the waste of resources and producing wallpaper does use up resources. Culprits will most likely be crazy wallpaper designs and funky wallpaper designs, though people with truly crazy and funky personalities may be able to live with such wallpaper for their whole lives. For more "normal" people (what's normal, anyway?), buying unconventional wallpaper is likely to end up in regret a few months down the road. These are wallpaper designs for walls, remember, and not a computer background wallpaper design that can be changed with a few clicks of the mouse.
Vintage wallpaper designs have stood the test of time and can be expected to be "in-style" longer than a lot of so-called 'modern' designs. Vintage is basically 'old', but they are designs that are not necessarily time-bound. These are patterns and images that are pleasing no matter when they were made. You may find vintage wallpaper in standards such as paisley, stripes, flowers, etc.
Simple, Bizarre, and Natural Designs
Oftentimes you might choose to go a little simpler and forego the designs in favor of colors, especially if you are an adherent of feng shui and intend to use colors to attract certain influences into your life. Black and white wallpaper designs, for example, can lend a stark feeling to a room. Such designs will look more serious and would probably not be a good choice for a lounge or a den for relaxing. Red wallpaper designs, on the other hand, may give the room a fiery energy- good for a home gym, perhaps, but most likely a bit bizarre for the living or dining room. For the bedroom, which should be relaxing as it is used for sleeping, solid colors like pink or green may be more suitable. Your personal tastes in and reactions to colors will be the best guide for choosing bedroom wallpaper designs that are relaxing to you.
Home wallpaper design is really a varied field, and some of the designs out there may really surprise you. For instance, there is a "skulls" wallpaper that is full of skulls, which may not be apparent at first glance. This would be a choice for the more morbid, but I'm sure there's people who buy it. The point is that there are many possibilities out there and it's possible to get creative with existing designs. Some modern designs are actually wallpaper murals that are closer to pieces of art than what we normally think of as wallpaper. These would be ultra modern, very trendy, and perhaps very short lived as well, though time will tell.
For people who are just looking for a wall to make their walls nicer and don't necessarily need to get wallpaper, consider natural building techniques if your home has not yet been built. Walls created of earth can be plastered with natural clay that helps to filter the air. It also looks and feels much better than any wallpaper that has ever been made! Some existing walls in houses may be plastered as well. With natural building materials, it would be a travesty to cover up walls built with nature's gifts with something as ephemeral as man-made wallpaper.
