Waterproof MP3 Player Reviews
By wavechild
Now that the masses have caught on to the absolutely amazing pursuit that is surfing, more and more people are looking to bring their music out to the water with them. This means getting a waterproof mp3 player, or at least getting one of the many waterproof mp3 player cases that are on the market. I am a surfer and wouldn't want to bring electronic equipment out with me to enjoy in the surf, but I can't make the statement that only phony surfers would want to listen to music instead of the sounds of nature during a surf session- Laird Hamilton has a waterproof mp3 player and has said that he enjoys using it while out on the water. Even though I don't plan on using a waterproof mp3 player while surfing, you have to respect Laird since he is the greatest big wave surfer EVER. But surfing is not the only activity in which people want to bring music to the water- many swimmers appreciate having music for their workout, especially if they've gotten somewhat bored with their regular routine. A waterproof mp3 player is also good for the spa(think relaxing music), kayaking, canoeing, and many other activities where water threatens to cut your music short. Even just for a day at the beach, it's a good idea as accidents do tend to happen around water. If nothing else, the waterproof casing will be good for keeping out the sand.
Choosing a Good Player Can Be a Little Tricky
Unlike regular, non-waterproof mp3 players which come in a seemingly
endless array of models and with more or less features but which get the
job of playing mp3s done pretty similarly, you have to really know a
few things to make sure you spend your money on a model and design that
works well because there can be a huge difference in sound quality once
you get underwater. The most important part of waterproof mp3 players
are the headphones. You can get a cheaper mp3 player, but you might be
sorry if you skimp on the waterproof headphones. If you're looking for
something that is only water-resistant in that you don't plan to listen
to music while your head is immersed in water, most models will be fine.
But if you will be doing any under-water music listening, normal
waterproof headphones won't really offer you very good sound. Also, fit
is very important if you are going to be engaged in any kind of
physical activity while wearing your headphones- you want the ear buds
to stay in your ears while swimming, not be falling out every minute or
so.
Three Popular Waterproof MP3 Players
The Dolphin waterproof mp3 player is a model that is pretty popular, judging by sales. The reviews, on the other hand, include many negative reviews. Problems experienced by many users include the common one of earphones falling out, but many users also cited that the product was cheaply made and many even reported that the product simply stopped working after a few uses. This could be a coincidence, but it would be wise to use caution if you are considering this product. It's not super cheap, either. You can get it for about $80 on Amazon, for a model that offers 2 GB of storage.
The H2o Man waterproof mp3 player is another all-around mp3 waterproof player choice that some have been pleased with. But as with the Dolphin player, many reviewers have expressed frustration with this product. The good features are the sound quality, which is better than a lot of the players and headphones on the market. The downside is that the batteries are not rechargeable, and if the headphones break, you can't just buy new headphones as they are not plug in but attached to the unit proper. However, in the waterproof mp3 players review for this unit, most customers who have purchased this product are happy with it. They express that it's not perfect, but get the job done. This player can be had for about $40,
and would probably be a better investment than the Nu Dolphin waterproof mp3 player.
If I were to start training in a swimming pool on days that I don't get in the ocean, I would want to invest in something like the Finis Swimp3 v2 waterproof mp3 player. The manufacturers of this mp3 player claim to overcome the problems with audio quality that other companies have through technology that transmits sound not through a medium such as air or water, but by directly vibrating the bones of the skull! This does away with problems like ear buds falling out and the like. Also, because water doesn't interfere with how the sound is transmitted, you have exceptionally clear music delivered to your brain. The SwiMP3 costs a bit over $100 if you buy from Amazon, with a savings of almost $40. That will get you 3.1 gigs of memory. This is one of the better choices for a waterproof mp3 player for swimming. For that price, it just might be the best waterproof mp3 player out there.

Hey Tom, thanks for commenting. Good luck finding something that works well... let us know how it goes!
Hey thanks for your help! Most of these products didn't have the best reviews, especially the headphones. I ended up buying a waterproof iPod Shuffle from H2OFriendly and waterproof headphones from H2OAudio. They stay in my ear well and I love the shuffles clip.
any idea if the tyman pro-trainer is good?
Hi
Check out the new Australian designed Ty-man. www.ty-man.com It also has other features such as heart rate monitor and coach to swimmer communication. Enter promo code TMTP55 for 20% discount until 10 November.
Seems a cool item. Nice post.
There are few new models like H2O Friendly, Diver, UWaterG2 and new Finis SwiMP3 that are performing realy well underwater. Some of them have limited IPX8 level water resistant protection.

Uwaterg2 professional quality underwater sound
The best underwater player on the market. Wouldnt go anywhere else due to the quality of the product. I also called into their company to ask for help with functioning the unit and everybody was great who I talked to
The Nu Dolphin is definitely a good choice. I would recommend it. My ear buds never fallout maybe it's just me though.
I bought the SwiMP3 (1st Gen) and on initial testing in the pool it seemed great. The build quality is good, and the bone conduction worked well provided your head is fully submerged. However, when swimming laps for swim training the SwiMP3 doesn't work as well. The noise of water rushing over your ears interferes badly with your ability to hear the music from the SwiMP3. I started using earplugs, which helped, but still the music volume was too low even when turned up to full volume. When doing open water swims the ambient noise makes the SwiMP3 effectively useless for me. Perhaps other people have bones that conduct sound better than I do, but unfortunately this initially promising device just didn't work for me.
I bought the Dolpine Lite. The ear buds are sticking out and if you swim fast they leak all the time and music will only work in one ear at the time. They broke very fast and new ones were as expensive as a new player... Tried other water proof ear phones that seemed to leak less but that broke the player even if it was the same connection...It had good sound though.. when it was working..

Thanks for sharing. I used to spend a lot of time in the water and wanted to make a waterproof MP3 player. Biggest hurdle was the ear phones. Thought about the bone phone but still too difficult. Thanks for putting this up...may have to look into the Dolphin player.
